Info about the Weekend Workcamp
Background: The butterfly species Mountain Alcon Blue (Phengaris rebeli) is listed as an endangered species by the IUCN, mostly because its habitat is more and more destroyed globally. The butterfly needs meadows containing the plant Cross-Leaved Gentian in order to reproduce and there are less and less such meadows. Such meadows can still be found in the surrounding of the city of Poysdorf in the Austrian region of Lower Austria, amidst a beautiful wine-growing landscape. Naturschutzbund Niederösterreich is an environmental NGO that supports and maintains protected areas in the region and that wants to contribute to conservation of species and ecosystems in Lower Austria.
Type of work: International and local volunteers in this camp will help by mowing steep Cross-Leaved Gentian meadows and will so contribute actively to preserve the species. Work will be physical and will be for about 5h each day.
Study Theme: Learning about plants and animals in the area, learning about ecological problems in the area and ecological initiatives active in the area. Additional free-time activities will depend on the weather: It is possible that we help in some steps of producing wine such as picking and pressing, there is a museum, etc.
Accomodation: Please bring your sleeping bag and sleeping mat, as we’ll sleep on the floor in one big room in a house right in the village. We will mostly cook for ourselves.
How do I get to Poysdorf?: International and Austrian volunteers will meet in Vienna at a bus station in the morning on September 25th. For participants from Slovakia and the Czech Republic it might be easier to take the train or bus directly to Poysdorf. We will send you more info about travelling after your registration.
Costs: No costs for food and accomodation! Your only costs are the travelling costs to Poysdorf.
